PRE-RALLY REPORTS: 1 - How it all started!  2 - To France  3 - Disaster?  4 - Pre-Rally Summary

The whole trip started with us reading an article in GQ magazine about "Banger Rallies" . The idea behind the rallies was that teams buy cars for under £100 and then drive them across Europe over a number of days, taking part in challenges to win points along the way. The team accumulating most points win a prize at the end of it all.

We thought that we could do that and it seemed like a fun challenge, so, having searched through the sites of a few rally organisers we decided on the Motoscape Challenge rally: "The Road To Krakow 2007"

We put our deposit down in April and started the search for a car. Months were spent, trawling local free ads papers, scrap yards and EBay, and then eventually in August, we found our motor!

Our 1992 K plate Vauxhall Cavalier was a snip at £95, and as the seller had been let down on a previous sale, he was keen to get rid of it ASAP. So, we set off to Manchester to collect it, having only seen a picture of half the car on the internet, and relying on a promise that the other half was in fact still attached to it.

It turned out that we were very lucky. The seller was a mechanic and the car had been owned by two of his mates, since new. 145,000 miles were showing on the clock and he even gave us a  fat envelope full of the old MOTs and receipts for the car. It had just had a new exhaust and a new radiator too, so we were laughing.

The drive back home was also a surprise. The 2.0 litre engine seemed smooth and all of the gears worked......that was the extent of our mechanical knowledge!

The car had all the mod cons too: electric windows, steering wheel, horn, and even a couple of speed dents on the side to make it go faster! We arrived home, happy that nothing had fallen off, and put her to bed in the garage.

Once we had received all of the stickers from the various companies, we set about plastering them onto the car, which was an interesting experience, helped along by alcohol.

We are really happy with the look of the car. All we then had to do was install the euro friendly fire extinguisher, breakdown kit and first aid box, and after a day of cleaning and vacuuming, the car was ready to go.

After 5 months of planning, team “Drive It Like You Stole It” in car 46 were ready to hit the road!
